Cleveland Plains Dealer published a story about a study done by six Cleveland State University student researchers who found that 30 minutes of Wii Boxing burns nearly the same amount of energy as a half hour boxing session at the local gym.   A group of 29 students spent working the punching bag and also the Wii.  The end result was that the students burned only 28 more calories when working out on the boxing bag (which is statistically insignificant).  So keep punching away at Wii Boxing.

Wii Catching On With Seniors
Written by S Warley
Sunday, 13 January 2008
We were at dinner a few nights ago and friends related a story that their parents (who never get out) had started going over to their neighbors house in the retirement community they live in to play Wii Sports.  Most popular apparently was Wii Bowling.  Apparently this is a growing trend with the elderly.  The Seattle Examiner ran a story entitled "Area seniors catch Wii fever" about this new segment of gamers.  Workout With Wii salutes our more senior Wii owners.  Anything that gets people socializing and more active is a good thing.

Beware of Wiitis

Monday, 10 December 2007

The California Athletic Trainers’ Association (CATA) is warning that Wii games like Wii Sports can lead to overuse injuries, such as pulled muscles, stress fractures and tendonitis that occur from repetitive play.  According to the article the New England Journal of Medicine lists Wiitis as a condition similar to tennis elbow, and a doctor in Spain diagnosed Nintenditis in a patient who suffered a shoulder injury after playing the Nintendo Wii for hours.

The CATA offers tips for staying safe and injury-free while exergaming:

  1. Warm-up. Do some jumping jacks, run or walk in place for three to five minutes. Then slowly stretch the legs, arms and lower back, holding each position for 30 seconds to avoid pulled muscles. Stretch again when finished playing.
  2. Dress appropriately. Wear tennis shoes with good support to prevent ankle injuries.
  3. Move obstacles. Make sure that objects like chairs, rugs, couches, tables or other obstacles are cleared from the area where the game is being played.
  4. Use proper technique. For the Wii, move the controller from the forearm and not just the wrist. When playing games that require larger movements, make sure not to overextend the knees, hips or other sensitive joints.
  5. Don’t ignore pain. Players need to listen to their bodies. If they feel pain or shortness of breath, they should stop immediately before the problem gets worse.
  6. Practice moderation. Limit play to an hour each day. Moderation is key.

We posted an article on stretching before your Wii Workout, late last year.

UK Insurance Company Warns About Wii Damage
Written by S Warley
Monday, 10 December 2007

Halifax Home Insurance an insurance company in the UK has warned Wii owner to be sure they carry proper insurance for Wii related damage.  According to the article "Massive damage can be caused by Wii".  The premise of the warning is that major damage can be caused to television sets if people over-exert themselves when playing the Nintendo Wii so you should be sure you have enough insurance to cover those expensive widescreen plasma tvs.

I guess we will see with all the soon to be new Wii owners, if the reports of Wii related damage jumps.  One would hope the new Wii Remote Jackets provided by Nintendo would mitigate a lot of the accidents reported by Wii owners.
